The Largest Banyon Tree in North America

The largest banyon tree in North America is nestled in a quaint square in Lahaina, Maui.  It is a magnificent tree whose branches stretch out to form bonds with other nearby trunks and it is upon these branches that one can experience a truly great tree climbing experience (though there are signs posted around the square asking visitors to refrain from climbing).  Not only does this tree inspire awe simply by its sheer size, but it also facilitates an amazing cultural gathering.  Maui and all of the Hawaiian islands are very environmentally conscious.  They acknowledge nature on what may be described as a spiritual level and this mindset seems to become palpable in Banyon Tree Park.  It is the gathering spot for locals, for visitors, for families, for artists, for art lovers, and for passersby.

I feel that these images nearly capture the emotions felt there- the relaxed embrace of a pair of legs around a branch, the strength of the branch as it holds up two, three, and more people, and the way its shade provides a comfortable place for an artist to sit and work as the rest of the world passes by him.
