Exams
We are nearing the end of our second week at base camp in Tanzania. Our time has been filled with classes, traveling lectures, transect walks, trips into Rhotia and Karatu, and exploration around the Moyo Hill Loop. Now we are passing our study time for exams before we take off for expedition in Serengeti National Park with doing anything but studying. We’ve been doing a lot of reading, but not of applicable materials. Of the many books being passed around, The Hunger Games trilogy has been in greatest demand. I was one of the first to read them and, though I had to make up my own ending to the third to be satisfied, I really enjoyed them. Apparently they’re all the rage back home right now too because of the first movie coming out? That’s what we hear anyway. Apparently Mary Kate Olsen is also dead. Who knew?
The Hunger Games have a lot to do with survival. Many of us here are not wilderness survival experts but we all have unique information about survival to lay on the table. We’ve spent some time teaching each other useful knots, animal snares, how to make primitive tools and weapons like spears and bow drills. I’ve loved it. This program has just been one more avenue for awesome educational opportunities.
